Clauses of result

"Alice and I keep on looking for a place for our summer holidays and now we are thinking about two or three African countries. Yes, we've been talking with some people who have already been there and they tell us that Africa is so beautiful that everybody wants to go back one day. The thing is that it is such a huge continent with so many different countries and cultures that you have to choose. For that reason, we are considering the possibility of going to South Africa or Kenya. Yes, we will have to save some money, but if we book know, it will be a bit cheaper."

Estudiemos a continuación el uso y las diferentes estructuras de las clauses of result.

a. Uso

Se utilizan las oraciones consecutivas o clauses of result para expresar el resultado o consecuencia de algo. Observa los siguientes ejemplos:

It was so cold that I didn't want to go out. Hacía tanto frío que no quiso salir.

He ran so fast that he won the race. Corrió tan rápido que ganó la carrera.

Mark is such a good man that everybody likes him. Mark es un hombre tan bueno que a todo el mundo le gusta.

En estos ejemplos hemos usado los conectores que introducen las clauses of result (so y such). Analicemos ahora cada uno de ellos y las diversas estructuras en las que se utilizan:

b. Estructura:

So + adjetivo + that + oración:

So delante del adjetivo significa "tan + el significado del adjetivo". Observa:

The water was so cold that I didn't swim.
El agua estaba tan fría que no nadé.

So + adverbio + that + oración:

También significa "tan + el significado del adverbio". Estudia este ejemplo:

I ate so quickly that I had a stomach-ache then. Comí tan deprisa que me dolía el estómago después.

So much + (sustantivo incontable) + that + oración:

So much significa "tanto" o "tanta". Observa estos ejemplos:

She works so much that she finishes very tired in the evening.
Trabaja tanto que termina muy cansada por la noche.

I drank so much water that I felt bad.
Bebí tanta agua que me sentía mal.

So many + sustantivo contable en plural + that + oración:

So many significa "tantos" o "tantas". Estudia este ejemplo:

He has so many friends that his house is always full of people.
Tiene tantos amigos que su casa siempre está llena de gente.

Such a/an + adjetivo + sustantivo contable en singular + that + oración:
Such
refuerza el significado del adjetivo que precede al nombre, por lo que se traduce al castellano por "tan". Observa:

Jim is such a tall man that Mr Smith wants him to play basketball.
Jim es un hombre tan alto que Mr Smith quiere que juegue al baloncesto.

Such + adjetivo + sustantivo contable en plural + that + oración:

Such refuerza al adjetivo y se traduce al castellano por "tan". Estudia este ejemplo:

They were such cheap shirts that I bought two of them.
Eran unas camisas tan baratas que me compré dos.

Such + adjetivo + sustantivo incontable + that + oración:

Such significa "tan + el significado del adjetivo". Observa:

It was such cold water that it was delicious.

Era un agua tan fría que estaba deliciosa.
